secured first division in 2008 matric exam and, therefore, they all were on Wednesday awarded Rs 10,000 each.
"We are extending the incentive scheme for minority students, which was a huge success, to the students of scheduled castes, scheduled tribes, backward castes and extremely backward castes," chief minister Nitish Kumar said after distributing bank drafts among the students at a function on Wednesday.
Students securing first division in the matric exam are given the cash incentive under the scheme, started for minority students a couple of years back. While the CM handed over the bank drafts to a few students, the same for others have been sent to their respective schools. The ministers incharge of the districts will distribute them among the intended beneficiaries at the functions to be held at district HQ towns.
"This scheme aims to give a boost to the students of educationally and socially backward classes and it is an incentive to them to continue coming out with flying colours in exams," the CM said.
Altogether 2,112 SC students, 271 ST students, 3,633 BC and EBC students and 5,800 students of minority community passed the 2008 matric exam with a first division. The minister for BC and EBC welfare, Hari Prasad Sah, said a sum of Rs 3.63 crore has been earmarked under the scheme for such first divisioners.
Minority welfare minister Shahid Ali Khan said the incentive scheme has worked wonders as the number of Muslim students securing first division at matric exam increased manifold during the last two years.
Nitish said he wants too see every child of school-going age in school. A few years back about 25 lakh children were out of school and several schemes were started to bring them to the schools. Now less than ten lakh children are out of schools and they belong to Muslim and Mahadalit classes. Talimi Markaz and Utthan Kendras have been set up in their localities for informal education to them.
"Positive results of these efforts would be visible in the next two years," the CM said.
Nitish also talked about the success of other schemes like Rs 700 each for middle school girls for dress and footwear and Rs 2,000 each for high school girls for bicycle. The bicycle scheme has now been extended to boys too, the CM said and added he favoured direct payment to the beneficiaries to prevent a "bicycle scandal" in Bihar.
"I hope the Centre and other states will adopt these schemes too just as they have copied our programmes of 50% reservation to women in panchayat and local bodies and creation of a special force comprising ex-Armymen," Nitish said.
